Othello (Conceptual Design)
By William Shakespeare
Venue: Forsyth County Public Library - Southside Branch
December 2024
Scenic Designer: Bridgette Tran
Set in 1954, this found-space production of Othello centers on the lives and relationships of the employees of the Cyprus branch of the Venice Library System (Forsyth County Public Library - Southside Branch). The play takes place in the middle of the winter, and utilizes multiple rooms of the library as well as the parking lot and outdoor reading areas.
Audience members will experience the tragedy of Shakespeare’s Othello against the backdrop of the 1950s Red Scare-influenced book-banning controversy, the racism of the decade, as well as the initial rise of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, queer literature, and pro-interracial relationship movements.
